HUUM UKU 4.2: What's New in HUUM's Sauna Control System

HUUM UKU 4.2 Wi-Fi control panel showing temperature and humidity on a dark wood sauna wall

HUUM UKU 4.2 is the current generation of HUUM's sauna control system. It replaces the single temperature sensor of the UKU 4.1 with two: a mandatory safety sensor above the heater and a new bench sensor that measures temperature and humidity where you sit. HUUM also redesigned the door sensor kit, added clearer coded error messages (E1 to E8), and switched to a heat-resistant cable rated to 401 °F (205 °C).

At Sauna Signature Radiant, we sell the HUUM UKU 4.2 Wi-Fi Sauna Control across Canada. You can run it from the wall panel or from the HUUM app. This guide covers every change in plain language. It is based on HUUM's North American UKU 4.2 manual and HUUM's own dealer training material.

What's new in the HUUM UKU 4.2 at a glance

UKU 4.1 (previous) UKU 4.2 (current)
Temperature sensing One temperature sensor measuring general room air A safety sensor above the heater plus a bench sensor at the far side of the room
Humidity Not measured Measured by the bench sensor
Maximum set temperature — 230 °F (110 °C) with the safety sensor only; 194 °F (90 °C) with the bench sensor
Door sensor Door sensor with its own cable Redesigned door sensor kit with a sensor mount, magnet holder and crimp heat-shrink sleeves
Sensor cable Separate cables, 197 + 197 in (5 + 5 m) One heat-resistant cable rated to 401 °F (205 °C), 65 ft (20 m) in the set
Error messages — Coded messages E1 to E8, each with on-screen guidance

Everything else you know from UKU stays: the CLASSIC, GLASS and WOOD panels, app control on the Wi-Fi model, steamer and light control, the child lock, and support for heaters up to 11 kW (18 kW with the Extension Box).

Why does the UKU 4.2 use two sensors?

The two sensors split one job into two. The safety sensor protects the sauna. The bench sensor measures what you actually feel on the bench. Earlier UKU systems used a single sensor for both, so they could not tell the heat near the heater apart from the heat where people sit.

With both sensors, HUUM says the system can:

  • prevent overheating more effectively
  • detect the temperature difference between the heater and bench level
  • measure the humidity in the room
  • deliver a more balanced, more even sauna

Safety sensor (mandatory). It sits directly above the heater and contains a thermal fuse. If the temperature ever reaches unsafe levels, the fuse breaks and heating stops. The sauna cannot be used without it.

Bench sensor (optional, strongly recommended). It measures temperature and relative humidity on the opposite side of the room, away from the heater's direct radiant heat. When it is installed, the control panel shows the bench reading, not the safety sensor's.

What changes when you install both:

  • Maximum set temperature. 230 °F (110 °C) with the safety sensor alone, and 194 °F (90 °C) with the bench sensor. HUUM's reasoning: the bench sensor sits away from the heater's direct heat, so this limit gives the highest bench temperature possible without compromising safety.
  • Humidity. With only the safety sensor, the panel shows an approximate humidity. With the bench sensor, it shows the measured value, next to a drop icon.
  • A backup. If the bench sensor fails (error E4), you can dismiss the message and carry on heating on the safety sensor alone.

Temperature calibration for Canadian outdoor saunas

Outdoor saunas with modest insulation can read low at the bench in cold weather, because the walls lose heat. UKU 4.2 lets you raise the bench reading by 0, 5 or 10 % (Settings → Heating settings → Temp. calibration). It only affects the bench sensor, never the safety sensor. HUUM's advice: if your sauna keeps struggling to reach its target, go up one step.

Where to install the safety and bench sensors

Sensor position decides how accurate your sauna is, so follow the manual to the inch. Fix each sensor housing with two screws using a hand screwdriver; HUUM warns that power tools can damage the sensor.

Safety sensor: always directly above the heater

  • Wall-mounted heater: on the wall or the ceiling. On the wall, keep it 2–6 in (50–150 mm) below the ceiling.
  • Floor-standing heater, clearance to combustibles of 1⁹⁄₁₆ in (40 mm) or less: on the wall above the heater, 2–6 in (50–150 mm) below the ceiling.
  • Floor-standing heater, clearance over 1⁹⁄₁₆ in (40 mm): on the ceiling, centred over the stone container where the elements are.
  • Keep it at least 2 in (50 mm) from any ceiling corner.
  • Wire it to terminals T1 and T2 on the main module.

Bench sensor: across the room from the heater

  • On the opposite side of the room from the safety sensor, wherever possible.
  • About 6 in (150 mm) below the ceiling.
  • At least 19¾ in (500 mm) from any vent, and 7⅞ in (200 mm) from doors, windows and corners. If you can't meet all three, move it towards a corner rather than towards a door, window or vent.
  • Wire it E1–E1, E2–E2, E3–E3 between the sensor and the main module.

Barrel saunas. If a wooden beam crosses the wall above the heater, put the safety sensor on the ceiling. Place the bench sensor on the side opposite the heater:

  • on the curved wall: 4–8 in (100–200 mm) from the end wall and 6 in (150 mm) below the highest point
  • on the end wall: 4 in (100 mm) from the side wall and 6 in (150 mm) below the highest point

Check before first use. The safety sensor should measure about 1.1 kΩ at 68 °F (20 °C). If it reads correctly but the panel still shows a sensor error, the fault is in the cable or a connection. If there's no reading at all, the sensor needs replacing. The bench sensor can't be tested this way; a faulty one is simply replaced.

The redesigned UKU 4.2 door sensor kit

The door sensor is mandatory on the UKU 4.2. If the door is open, the controller won't start the heater, and it stops heating if a session is already running. That protects the materials around the heater and the heater's own elements from overheating.

HUUM redesigned the kit for a more secure, more stable installation, with less risk of incorrect mounting or a sensor working loose over time. The kit includes the door sensor, a sensor mount, a magnet with holder, double-sided tape, a screw and two crimpable heat-shrink sleeves.

How to install it

  1. Mount the sensor on the handle side of the door frame, preferably near the bottom of the door. The sensor is rated to 176 °F (80 °C), so higher positions run hotter.
  2. Drill a ¹³⁄₃₂ in (10 mm) hole in the door frame.
  3. Join the cables with the crimp heat-shrink sleeves from the kit.
  4. Push the sensor into the hole using the mount. Secure it with silicone or glue if needed.
  5. Connect the cable to terminals O1 and O2 on the main module. Keep the cable run under 50 ft (15 m).
  6. Fix the magnet holder to the door leaf with the double-sided tape or the screw.

How to test it

  1. Close the sauna door, switch on the panel and set a temperature.
  2. Start heating. The elements glow red and the relays switch on.
  3. Open the door. Within 5–10 seconds the relays switch off and the panel shows "Door open".
  4. Close the door. The message clears and heating resumes.

Where to put the main module and the control panel

Main module: outside the sauna room. That's HUUM's default. A weatherproof housing can be added for extra protection from water, snow and condensation. The module works down to −40 °F (−40 °C), though the display may respond more slowly in extreme cold.

  • Wi-Fi model: place it where your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi reaches. Sauna rooms and metal electrical panels block the signal.
  • If it must go inside: no higher than 4 in (10 cm) off the floor and at least 59 in (150 cm) from the heater, ideally under the bench. Keep its surroundings under 122 °F (50 °C). Above 158 °F (70 °C), it stops heating and shows error E7.
  • Heavy use: if the sauna runs every day, for sessions over 3 hours, at more than 176 °F (80 °C), install the module outside.
  • Mount it upright on a wall with the cable openings facing down. Never on the ceiling or a sloped surface.

Control panel: depends on the case.

  • GLASS and WOOD panels can go inside the sauna, away from the heater. Keep the top edge no higher than 40 in (100 cm) above the floor and at least 20 in (50 cm) from any exhaust vent. If the exhaust vent is on the door wall, put the panel on the other side of the door.
  • CLASSIC (plastic) panel must be installed outside the sauna room.
  • The GLASS panel is recessed into the wall. Where that isn't possible, the UKU Surface Frame mounts it on the surface.
  • Outdoors, protect any panel with an enclosure.
  • Keep the panel cable under 50 ft (15 m), and don't run it alongside high-current cables.

Electrical connection. A licensed electrician must make it, on a dedicated circuit with a breaker that disconnects all poles. HUUM specifies supply cable meeting CSA 49, rated to at least 140 °F (60 °C), with crimped ends. HUUM also recommends connecting the system without a GFCI. The neutral is only needed if you run 120 V accessories such as a light or a 120 V steamer.

How UKU 4.2 protects your sauna

Failure detection. UKU watches how fast the room heats up. If the rise is too slow, it assumes heat is escaping and shuts the heater off (error E6). It only runs when the sauna starts below 104 °F (40 °C).

Sensors installed Required rise within 60 minutes
Safety sensor only 72 °F (40 °C)
Safety sensor and bench sensor 36 °F (20 °C)

The usual causes are a door or window left open, poor insulation, a heater too small for the room, or a sensor installed in the wrong place. Also check that the ventilation ports you open for drying the room are closed again.

Overheating pauses. UKU pauses heating after every 30 minutes. This protects the surfaces around the heater when a heater is undersized or the ventilation is wrong and the heater would otherwise run flat out. HUUM doesn't recommend turning pauses or failure detection off. Doing so requires the last four digits of the main module's MAC code.

Remote start safety (Wi-Fi model). Before the app can start the sauna, someone confirms on the panel that the room is safe: nothing on or near the heater, door closed. Hold the button for 3 seconds and answer yes. The confirmation lasts until the door is opened again.

Other safeguards. A child lock, an optional settings password, and a maximum heating time of 3 or 6 hours for private saunas (12 hours semi-public, 18 hours public).

UKU 4.2 error codes E1 to E8

UKU 4.2 adds clearer, coded error messages that tell you what happened and what to check. Most can be cleared on the spot.

Code Panel message What it means What to do
E1 Door open! The door sensor and magnet aren't aligned. Close the door. If it persists, check the magnet's position and the sensor cable at the main module.
E2 Steamer dry! The steamer has run out of water. Refill the steamer. If the message stays, the steamer needs inspecting.
E3 Safety sensor error! The main module has lost contact with the safety sensor, or its thermal fuse has broken. Check the cable at both ends. If it's sound, the sensor needs replacing.
E4 Bench sensor error! The main module has lost contact with the bench sensor. Check the cable at both ends. Press the button to dismiss, then again to keep heating on the safety sensor alone.
E5 Sensor installation error! The safety sensor reads cooler than the bench sensor. Check that the safety sensor is above the heater and the bench sensor is placed per the manual.
E6 Heating disabled. Insufficient temp. rise! Failure detection tripped: heat is escaping the room. Close all doors, windows and drying vents, then press the button to restart.
E7 Main module overheat! The main module went above 158 °F (70 °C). Check where the module is mounted and contact us. It can point to a serious fault.
E8 Steamer overcurrent! The steamer or an accessory is drawing too much power. Check the device against the limits below: 2,500 W maximum for a steamer.

If an error comes back after these checks, contact us with a photo of the panel. Genuine replacement sensors and door kits are listed under specifications below.

Steamer, lighting and ventilation

Steamer. In North America, UKU 4.2 works with a 1,250 W steamer at 120 V or a 2,500 W steamer at 240 V. It must be an intrinsically safe unit with a built-in thermal cut-off, because UKU detects low water from the steamer's power draw rather than a level sensor. Once wired, turn it on under Settings → Humidity settings → Steamer.

  • Heating pauses while the steamer is running, and the steamer only runs while the sauna is heating.
  • It starts shortly before the target temperature, so the room heats faster. You can choose how many degrees before target it starts (Hum. start temp).
  • Steamer safety is on by default and shows E2 when the tank runs dry. An optional 3-minute water check at start-up confirms the tank is filled.
  • The steamer switches off automatically above 194 °F (90 °C).
  • Always fill the tank before enabling the steamer. Running it dry can burn out its element.

The hotter the room, the lower the humidity you can set, following the standard HUUM applies:

Target or current temperature Humidity you can set
32–113 °F (0–45 °C) 5–90 %
122 °F (50 °C) 5–55 %
131 °F (55 °C) 5–45 %
140 °F (60 °C) 5–40 %
149 °F (65 °C) 5–35 %
158 °F (70 °C) 5–30 %
167 °F (75 °C) 5–25 %
176 °F (80 °C) 5–20 %
185 °F (85 °C) 5–15 %
185–194 °F (85–90 °C) 5–10 %
Above 194 °F (90 °C) Steamer off

For an accurate humidity reading, install the bench sensor.

Light or ventilation fan. Connect one device to the LL and LN outputs: up to 100 W incandescent or fan, or 50 W LED, at 120 V. Turn on Settings → Lamp, then switch it with two quick presses of the panel button. With Door switch on, the device turns on for 10, 15 or 20 minutes whenever the sauna door opens.

HUUM UKU 4.2: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the UKU 4.1 and the UKU 4.2?

The UKU 4.2 replaces the single temperature sensor with two: a mandatory safety sensor above the heater and a bench sensor that measures temperature and humidity. It also adds a redesigned door sensor kit, coded error messages E1 to E8, and a heat-resistant cable rated to 401 °F (205 °C).

Is the UKU 4.2 bench sensor required?

No. The sauna runs on the safety sensor alone, but HUUM strongly recommends installing the bench sensor for accurate temperature, measured humidity and a more even sauna.

Why can't I set my sauna above 194 °F with the bench sensor?

With the bench sensor installed, the maximum set temperature is 194 °F (90 °C), because the sensor sits away from the heater's direct heat. With the safety sensor only, the maximum is 230 °F (110 °C).

Where does the UKU 4.2 safety sensor go?

Directly above the heater, on the wall 2–6 in (50–150 mm) below the ceiling, or on the ceiling. Floor-standing heaters with more than 1⁹⁄₁₆ in (40 mm) of clearance to combustibles need the ceiling position, centred over the stones.

Is the door sensor mandatory on the UKU 4.2?

Yes. The heater won't start, or will stop heating, while the door is open. The sensor mounts low on the handle side of the door frame and is rated to 176 °F (80 °C).

Can the UKU main module go inside the sauna?

HUUM recommends outside. If it must go inside, mount it no higher than 4 in (10 cm) off the floor, at least 59 in (150 cm) from the heater, and keep it under 122 °F (50 °C). For daily sessions over 3 hours above 176 °F (80 °C), install it outside.

Can the control panel be installed inside the sauna?

The GLASS and WOOD panels can, with the top edge no higher than 40 in (100 cm) and at least 20 in (50 cm) from any exhaust vent. The CLASSIC plastic panel must be installed outside the sauna room.

What does error E6 mean on a HUUM UKU?

E6 means failure detection shut the heater off because the room didn't heat up fast enough. Close all doors, windows and drying vents, then press the button to restart.

Does the UKU 4.2 work in a Canadian winter?

Yes. The main module works down to −40 °F (−40 °C). For outdoor saunas that read low at the bench in cold weather, the temperature calibration setting raises the bench reading by 5 or 10 %.

Which steamers work with the UKU 4.2 in Canada?

Intrinsically safe steamers with a thermal cut-off, rated 1,250 W at 120 V or 2,500 W at 240 V. The steamer switches off above 194 °F (90 °C).
